Location: The labeled tree is right of the No. 9 fairway. Another example is to the left of the No. 6 fairway.
Tree information: Also Called Swamp Red Oak. More Alkaline Tolerant than other members of the Red Oak group growing occasionally in pH 7.8 to 8.0 soils.
Size: Can approach 100’.
Growth rate: 1 to 1 1/2 ‘ per year.
Foliage description: Very similar to Q. rubra, usually 7 lobes with deep cuts to mid-rib. Colors well in neutral to acid soils less so in more alkaline locations. Named for Benjamin Franklin Shumard (the state geologist of Texas in the 1860’s)
