Cornelian Cherry

(Cornus Mas)

Location: These trees are located behind the No. 13 green.

Tree Information: The plant is a member of the Dogwood family and the one that blooms the earliest. It has yellow flowers that bloom usually within a day or two of Forsythia in Walla Walla and is the same color.  It is called Cornelian Cherry because of the red fruit it bears

 

Size: 20 to 25’ tall at maturity.

Growth Rate: Medium

Foliage Description: Opposite leaves of typical dogwood vein pattern. Weak reddish-purple fall color.

USDA Hardiness Zone: 4 to 8

Provenance: Schictel’s Nursery. Planted in 1998. Original seed stock came from Olmsted seed stock collected in the Olmsted South Park,  Buffalo, NY.
